Calling on the hive mind for input on org charts
When we noticed great engagement on a recent question in one of our online community groups, we thought we’d share it here for additional input. Your colleagues in the profession want to know:
Who does your volunteer coordinator report to?
And the surveyed said…
- “Volunteer Coordinator reports to Volunteer Manager; Volunteer Manager reports to Director of Operations.”
- “The Volunteer Coordinator reports to our Assistant Director.”
- “The volunteer program falls under our Director of Development & Community Relations.”
- “Our Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Operations Manager.”
- “For us, this role is under HR.”
- “I have seen a couple structures in larger shelters. They reported to the Director of Community Engagement or Director of Operations.”
- “There’s really no right answer except maybe, ‘It depends.’ When I was running a shelter, for us it made sense for the volunteer program to be under HR. But I’ve worked with other shelters where that wasn’t the best option.”

We have a Manager, Volunteer Programs who reports to the Chief of People. Reporting to the Manager, Volunteer Programs are two Volunteer Program Business Partners and one Volunteer Program Specialist.
Our Volunteer Coordinator(s) report to the Volunteer Manager. They, in turn, report to the Director of Community Programs.
Our Volunteer Manager reports directly to the Senior Director of Philanthropy. That team oversees our Community Outreach programs such as Public Canine Obedience classes, Pet Therapy, and Community Events.
I am the Volunteer Coordinator and I report to my Animal Care Manager.
Volunteer coordinator is so 2010 – we prefer volunteer engagement professional 😎.
When I was a volunteer coordinator (sigh) at a shelter, I reported to the Marketing Director, then the Director of Advancement, then HR. I had a dotted line to ops.
