Tip of the Week: Disaster Planning Resources for Rescues & Rural Shelters

August 3, 2026, The Association

Now’s a great time to proactively discuss disaster preparedness. These resources from BISSELL can help get that convo started

The folks at BISSELL Pet Foundation report that one of the biggest challenges they encounter during disasters is that many rescue organizations do not have plans in place before an emergency occurs.  As a result, the burden often falls on local animal shelters, emergency responders, and community partners who are already stretched thin managing the crisis.

To that end, they’ve just published a new toolkit designed to encourage rescues and rural shelters to think proactively about disaster preparedness. The toolkit includes a 33-page Disaster Planning for Rescues & Rural Shelters that covers a list of topics from geo-specific disaster triggers to capacity-based decisionmaking; the action plan checklist, quick reference card and activation flip chart are expertly designed to quickly and clearly convey steps, supplies and systems needed in a disaster situation.

If your organization is a rescue or rural shelter, this resource is specifically designed for you; all others, please pass it on to your rescue partners and colleagues at rural orgs.

You can get the toolkit here; scroll to locate the resource and click on the title to download.
