Tip of the Week: Your Go-To Guide for Engaging the Community

February 7, 2022, The Association

It’s Monday, and that means we’re here to pass along a tool, a time-saver, or a rockin’ resource. This week we’ve got a guide that can help you and your colleagues shape, plan, and assess a community engagement program.

“We know that the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters is an incredibly huge help to our operations in sheltering,” says Dr. Brittany Watson, Director of  Shelter Animal Medicine at University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. “Why wouldn’t we utilize the same type of guidelines for developing community engagement?”

Enter Principles of Community Engagement, a seminal tool put together by National Institutes of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The guidelines cover 9 principles of community engagement, divided into 3 topic areas—what to consider before engagement, what is necessary for the engagement, and how to determine success of the program.

“This is the number-one resource I go back to all the time,” says Watson. If your organization is involved in—or wants to start—a community engagement program, get your guidelines here.

Dr. Watson shared this resource and other tips during last week’s webinar, Practicing Ethical Community Engagement. If you missed it, you can register for the recording.
