Letter from the President: Are Animal Welfare Professionals Fairly Compensated?

June 20, 2025, Jim Tedford

Complete the 2025 Compensation & Benefits Study and see how your organization stacks up

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

It has been two whole years since I reached out to you asking that you prioritize participation in our biannual Compensation & Benefits Study.  And you know what that means…a brand new study is in process in 2025 and I’m back to remind you to participate.

Why should you and your team invest the time to submit your compensation and benefits data to this study?  I’m glad you asked. Here are my top three reasons to participate in the Compensation & Benefits Study:

1.  In animal welfare work, our people are our most valuable assets. It is critical that we all do the best job possible of compensating our animal welfare professionals fairly.  It’s good for your workplace culture, it’s good for staff morale, and it’s good for your bottom line. Replacing folks who leave for better pay and benefits is expensive, and in today’s tight job market it’s tougher than ever to find great people.

2. The value of the study to you, your organization and your colleagues is tied directly to the number of organizations submitting data. The database becomes more and more relevant and diverse when more organizations add to it. Make sure your organization is represented!

3.  By participating you gain free, unlimited access to this valuable resource.  You can query data and run a plethora or reports to help as you benchmark your compensation and benefits structure against similar organizations. Completing at least 80% of your data set before the June 30 deadline gets you free access to the data and endless customizable reports.

Hopefully I’ve made my case.  Don’t delay – start the survey today. Recruit your HR and accounting staff to help gather relevant information and add it to the 2025 Compensation and Benefits Study right away.  You can use this tool to make budgetary decisions, to support your case when asking for funding, and to ensure you can attract and retain the best people possible.

Thanks in advance for your full participation,

Jim
