Tip of the Week: Pay Attention!
November 24, 2025, The Association
Have you mastered this foundational active listening technique?
The Center for Creative Leadership recently published a fabulous article that outlines six techniques of active listening. Practicing the first technique alone—the not-so-simple art of paying attention—will find you better equipped to understand the needs and concerns of your team members.
Here’s a breakdown of all that’s involved in this foundational practice.
How to Pay Attention as an Active Listener
- Allow “wait time” before the other person responds
- Don’t cut the person off, finish their sentences, or start formulating your answer before they’ve finished
- Take note of your body language, as well as your frame of mind when engaging in active listening
- Be focused on the moment, make eye contact, and operate from a place of respect as the listener
