Tip of the Week: Going Platinum
The Golden Rule has been around since the time of Confucius. This week we take it next level.
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
The philosophy behind the Golden Rule is a cornerstone of many religions and cultures, embracing respect, kindness and fairness.
What happens, though, when one takes a slightly different approach? “When we think about The Golden Rule, we think about treating folks how you want to be treated,” shared Jasmin Robinson, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives at The Association, in her recent webinar. “But if we are thinking about The Platinum Rule, we want to be mindful and treat folks how they want to be treated, which is very conditional. And, it really speaks to their individualized experiences.”
This shift in focus can be especially helpful if you are trying to create a work culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. “This principle recognizes that everyone has different needs, preferences, and values,” writes Dr. Neferiatiti Holt on LinkedIn, “and that treating everyone the same way may only sometimes be practical or appropriate. Instead, the Platinum Rule encourages individuals to listen to others, understand their needs and desires, and adapt their behavior accordingly.”
Are there situations in your workplace—including difficult conversations you are preparing for—where applying The Platinum Rule might offer deeper understanding and resolution? If this tip resonated, listen to the recording of Robinson’s webinar, “How To Respond When You Are Called Out for a Microaggression.”
