I think, as a field, we’re evolving to be even be more compassionate in how we define responsible pet ownership. Loving your pet and struggling financially are not mutually exclusive. Many people just need temporary support, and if we can step in early with empathy and resources, we can prevent unnecessary surrender and keep a family together.

When Kentucky Humane Society helps a family keep a beloved pet, we’re not just impacting that animal; we’re preserving companionship, stability, and mental health, and sometimes giving a person the strength to keep going during a really difficult time.

That is animal welfare. I have been in this field for 18 years, and it has been quite the rollercoaster.  But one thing remains the same – people will not give up! I am so proud to work alongside hundreds of the most empathetic and dedicated people. Indeed, one thing I often say is that it was the animals who first brought me to this work, but it is people who keep me here.

There is so much resilience and heart in the people of this field. Even during incredibly challenging times, people come together and push forward through increased collaboration and creative problem-solving.

But what gives me the most hope are the moments we witness every single day. A family keeping a pet they thought they were going to lose. A rural shelter partner feeling supported instead of alone. A staff member going above and beyond for an animal in need. A community rallying together after a disaster. Those moments remind me that compassion is still a powerful force.
