Tip of the Week: Updated COVID Quarantine Guidelines

It’s Monday, and that means we’re here to share timely need-to-know info from your colleagues in the field. Today’s tip comes from the Shelter Medicine Academic Consortium.

Wondering what to do with dogs and cats potentially exposed to COVID? According to their recently updated guidelines, The Shelter Medicine Academic Consortium (SMAC) recommends elimination of quarantine periods for dogs and cats from COVID-exposed households.

“There is no evidence that companion animals play a significant role in spreading COVID-19,” states SMAC. And with many shelters returning to standard operations without quarantine, “there have been no reported reverse impacts on shelter population health or human health related to exposed cats or dogs.”
