Tip of the Week: This Question Can Change Everything

December 6, 2021, The Association

It may be Monday, but we’re looking ahead to, well, Looking Forward: The Future of Animal Welfare. The 3-day virtual conference kicks off tomorrow at 1 ET, and today’s tip is a bit of a warm-up for the juicy conversations and reflections in store. There’s still time to register if you haven’t already.

How can we be more innovative?

DeSean Brown, One & All’s VP of Client Strategy & Success, loves hearing that question. And when he does hear it, he has a crucial follow-up question. “It’s almost like saying, ‘Hey, I want to be more fashionable.’ That can potentially mean a lot of different things,” he says, “so be sure to define what innovation means for you—in conjunction with what it means for your community and for your supporters.”

And in thinking about innovation, DeSean encourages organizations to conduct a self-assessment as a team. “This gives you the opportunity to double-down on programs that are successful, or decide, ‘Now is the time to try new things.’” But if you don’t create the space for this, he cautions, “these opportunities are missed, and you find yourself planning for the next fiscal year without getting everyone together for a call or a meeting.”

This tip was originally shared in a conversation with The Association’s Katherine Shenar; listen to the podcast here.

More DeSean? Coming right up! Join him along with his colleague Megan Thorne at the conference tomorrow, Tuesday, for Game Night at 4:40pm. Oh, and there will be prizes.
