Tip of the Week: Teambuilder for Small Groups

April 7, 2025, The Association

This tried-and-true exercise is especially good for small hybrid teams

Teambuilding… some people love it. Some, not so much. Yet, as HRMorning.com shared in a recent article, it can be a smart strategy for building relationships, collaboration, and strengthening a team’s ability to solve problems together.

Here’s a tried-and-true teambuilder that’s especially effective for hybrid teams of between two and twelve who don’t often interact in person. Of course, it works in person, too—this one’s a classic—and you can always break out into groups to accommodate larger teams.

Exercise: “What Do We Have in Common”

Adapted from the article, 14 Team-Building Activities for Small Teams

The group’s assignment is to come up with five things they all have in common — that are not related to work. They’ll need to dig in and dive deep to come up with commonalities, so it’ll help to think beyond the obvious. Suggest that they start with hobbies, odd habits, favorite and least favorite foods, their shortcomings, travel, and high school experiences. For very small groups, this exercise can take 10-15 minutes to discuss and share out; adjust as necessary.

Have you tried this? What’s your go-to teambuilder?
