Tip of the Week: Just Chillin’

August 9, 2021, The Association

Welcome to Tip of the Week! Every Monday, we’ll be passing along tools, time-savers, and just-plain-genius ideas that your colleagues and members of The Association have suggested and tested. If you’ve got a helpful how-to that’s easy to grok and even easier to implement, leave a comment and tell us all about it.

As part of their in-house enrichment program, during the hot summer months Arizona Humane Society stocks their freezer with two types of frozen treats—one for the animals and one for the staff. “Folks can go grab a treat for themselves and one for an animal, and then go take some time to chill out and hang with an animal,” says AHS’ Linda Anderson, Senior Manager of Animal Care & Experience. “Our Chill Out program also helps highlight the benefits of enrichment for both people and animals.”

Here’s AHS’ simple recipe for frozen dog and cat treats:

Ingredients for dogs

– Low-sodium broth diluted with water (1:1) or water
– Canned pumpkin, frozen veggies, peanut butter, yogurt, wet dog food or small dog treats

Ingredients for cats

– Low-sodium broth diluted with water (1:1) or water
– Canned chicken, canned tuna, meat baby food, scrambled eggs, wet cat food or small cat treats

Instructions

  1. Place a tablespoon for dogs/teaspoon for cats of any of the above ingredients (or a combination—your choice) into each of the compartments of an ice-cube tray
  2. Fill with diluted broth or water
  3. Freeze until solid and serve
