Tip of the Week: Animal Welfare’s Turnover Rate

May 29, 2025, The Association

How do your agency’s numbers stack up against the profession as a whole?

When a member of The Association recently inquired in our online community about the average employee turnover rate in animal shelters, we had the answer in just a few clicks.

And according to The Association’s latest Compensation & Benefits Benchmarking Study, the good news continues. While the 2022 study reported a decrease in turnover rates in animal welfare, 2024 numbers are even lower. The median turnover rate in animal welfare has come down from 31.8% to 28.9%. Turnover at the 25th percentile is 15.5 percent, while the turnover rate at the 75th percentile is 50 percent. While numbers vary as to the national voluntary turnover rate for all industries, according to a Payscale survey, the average turnover rate for employers is 18%.

How does your organization stack up?

This statistic and other high-level data are collected as part of the Compensation & Benefits Benchmarking Study. Organizations that submit data and reach the completion threshold will have immediate access to the results. Be a part of this crucial study if you haven’t already submitted; data collection is open through June 30.
