Tip of the Week: 2025 Pet Reunification Research Report

March 17, 2026, The Association

DocuPet’s recent research sheds light on lost dogs, their owners, and the people who might find them

We know that lost pets have a higher chance of being reunified with their families if they’re wearing visible identification—but how does this correlate to the beliefs and attitudes of owners regarding lost pets and lost pet prevention? To add to seminal lost-pet research conducted in 2012, last year DocuPet surveyed 1,500 dog owners across United States and Canada, and their detailed findings have just been released.

Sample highlights from DocuPet’s 2025 Pet Reunification Research

The vast majority of dog owners surveyed are highly involved pet owners, with 23% reporting that they’d lost their dog at least once within the last 5 years. What might it mean for the field that over a half of these lost dogs were not wearing collar and visible ID, when a clear, simple message educating owners about the importance of ID could increase the likelihood of return?
