March 13, 2023, The Association

The same questions—and a couple extra—we always ask. This is the first time, however, one of the answers involved a charcuterie board.

Name & Title:  Kristi Mack, HR Director, Humane Society Silicon Valley
Member of The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement since:  2021

The Association: Describe yourself in three words.
Kristi Mack: Dedicated, enthusiastic, empathetic

The Association: Describe Humane Society Silicon Valley in three words.
Kristi Mack: Passionate, inclusive, driven

The Association: Tell us about one small victory you had this week—personally or professionally.
Kristi Mack: When an employee out of the blue asks to connect, you know you’ve built trust.

The Association: What’s the last movie you saw ?
Kristi Mack: Woman in Gold

The Association: Please share a hidden (or not-so-hidden) talent.
Kristi Mack: I enjoy making greeting cards and gift boxes/bags. I don’t have an online shop, it’s just fun to give them away.

The Association: From your perspective, what are the top 3 most important trends or topics in HR in the animal welfare sector right now?
Kristi Mack: Retention, engagement, and total rewards

The Association: What about the top 3 most important trends regarding compensations and benefits?
Kristi Mack:

  • Creativity and affordability (moving to $0 deductible medical plan so staff, specifically hourly employees, are not having access to care be a financial decision)
  • Employee wellness (maximizing amount of no-cost confidential counseling through employee assistance program, compassion fatigue program)
  • Being ahead of the game/competitive (need to compete with private practice, passion alone is not the sole factor anymore to attract/retain folks in this economy)

The Association: Thank you for serving as Committee Chair for the 2023 Compensation and Benefits Study Committee. What surprised you and the committee as you prepared this year’s survey, which opens up for data collection on March 14?
Kristi Mack: Actually there were no surprises. We had a very collaborative committee, which benefited everyone by having different voices/perspectives shared throughout the process.

The Association: OK—last question for fun… You can invite 5 people from all of history to dinner. Who’s at the table, and what are you eating?
Kristi Mack:
