October 5, 2026, The Association

This free training program from Vancouver Humane Society is recommended time and time again by your colleagues in the field

With its origins in human services, a trauma-informed approach — including building trust and ensuring emotional safety with clients — is also highly relevant to our sector. Vancouver Humane Society offers a 41-lesson course on Implementing a Culturally Safe & Trauma-Informed Approach that’s directed at animal services staff. It’s also five-star recommended by many of your colleagues in the field.

“I’d suggest checking it out,” recommends the ASPCA’s Kay Joubert, Director of the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative. “This free course focuses on how to approach all interactions with a culturally aware and trauma-informed approach. It takes about 2 hours and can be done in short sessions to fit into staff schedules. It’s appropriate for volunteers as well.”
