Tip of the Week: Getting $ to Assist Pet Owners Facing Housing Challenges
Ideas on how your shelter can secure funding to help renters with pet deposits and fees
Is your organization prioritizing programs and strategies to keep people and their pets together? If so, you may be working specifically with pet owners who are facing housing challenges—and perhaps could use more funds to cover pet deposits, fees and rent.
The Pet-Inclusive Housing Inititative, presented by Michelson Found Animals and Human Animal Bond Research Institute, has created a one-sheet of tips to help secure the funds, whether you’re asking your donors or applying for a grant.
This includes the type of data you should be digging into and tracking to help build your case. “Keep track of how many pet owners contact the shelter about housing challenges,” they suggest, as well as contacting local rental properties to find out the average cost of a pet deposit, pet fee, and monthly pet rent in your area. Get additional tips here.
These tips are among the many resources offered by the Pet-Inclusive Housing Initiative, from talking points to help owners understand the Fair Housing Act to ideas for organizing adoption and foster events at rental communities. You’ll find them all here.
