Tip of the Week: 2025 State of the Nonprofit Sector
October 27, 2025, The Association
Results show a growing tension between the demand for our services and an increase in financial constraints
Last year, Nonprofit Finance Fund collected data from over 2,200 nonprofits across the United States, and the results of their tenth survey conducted since 2009 have recently been released.
A high-level overview of the financial and operational data reveals tension between the increasing demand for nonprofit services and growing financial constraints:
- 85% of respondents expected service demand to increase in 2025
- 36% ended 2024 with an operating deficit—the highest in the 10 years that NFF has been conducting the survey
- 86% reported that high costs due to inflation have impacted their clients and their organizations
- More than half of survey respondents have 3 months or less cash on hand
These findings, along with other emerging trends, paint a powerful picture of all that nonprofits do for communities. See how your organization measures up, and consider how you might use the data to advocate for funding.
